LOCATION:What Makes for a Good Day?
DESCRIPTION:
This week's class will be taught by Jason Rubenstein\, and it is entitled\, &ldquo\;What Makes for a Good Day?&rdquo\;

What and why is Yom Tov? Towards which experiences of holidays and holiness are we directed by the Mishnah? Using the Talmudic material as a starting point\, we will look at the directions in which that material leads us in framing and living the twelve days of Hag each year.&nbsp\;

Jason Rubenstein is a faculty member at Yeshivat Hadar\, where he teaches Mussar&nbsp\; (ethics). He is a fourth-year rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary and holds an MA in Talmud from JTS and an AB in Social Studies from Harvard College. For the past two summers\, Jason has coordinated Yeshivat Hadar's group processing and worked as sho'el umeshiv (a resource during Talmud study). An alumnus of Yeshivat Ma'ale Gilbo'a\, Jason has led several trips for the Nesiya Institute.

DESCRIPTION:
This week's class will be taught by Shmuel Kadosh\, and it is entitled\, &ldquo\;Fooling God: Legal Fictions in Jewish Law&rdquo\;
Jewish law is replete with haramot\, mechanisms to avoid the consequences of another law.&nbsp\; Selling hametz on Pesah and the heter iska (which circumvents the prohibition of charging another Jew interest) are just two mechanims that Jews utilize every year. At first glance\, the use of such mechanisms seems bizarre.&nbsp\; Why does Jewish law allow you to cheat and avoid the consequences of a specific commandment?&nbsp\;&nbsp\; In the class\, we will discuss the range of legal fictions utilized in Jewish law\, and examine their limits.&nbsp\; We will also address the underlying theological difficulty presented by haramot &ndash\; What does it mean to &lsquo\;fool God&rsquo\; through the use of legal mechanisms?

Shmuel Kadosh currently works as an Assistant Attorney General in the Investor Protection Bureau at the New York State Attorney General's office. He graduated in 2008 from New York University School of Law\, where he was an editor on the Law Review.&nbsp\; Shmuel has taught before at Hadar\, both at the Beit Midrash and summer Yeshiva.&nbsp\; He is excited to return once again to study with this wonderful community.

A word about Kashrut: Members of our community have different standards of Kashrut in their homes. In an effort to accommodate all members of our community\, we ask that all food be prepared in a kosher kitchen\, and ingredients for the meal (including cheese) be marked with a recognized kosher symbol (more than just &quot\;K&quot\;). If\, in general\, you use non-hechshered domestic cheese in your kitchen\, it is still possible to prepare food for the dinner\, as long as the ingredients for the meal are in accordance with the Kashrut policy described above and you haven't used your pots for 24 hours (Ben Yomo). Or\, you could simply make a meat meal! Whether you attend a meal or host a meal\, all food bought or made should follow this policy. If you have any questions\, including how to meet these Kashrut standards\, please email contact@kehilathadar.org

DESCRIPTION:
Join Yeshivat Hadar on Wednesday evenings\, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 pm for a new evening class given by Rabbi Shai Held!
Few texts in the history of Judaism have been as evocative\, elusive\, and controversial as Genesis 22\, the story of the Akedah.&nbsp\; Why does God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son\, and why does Abraham agree? What are the consequences of this fateful event for Abraham\, Isaac\, and Sarah -- and for us as readers and students of this text?&nbsp\;

We'll begin with a close literary and theological exploration of the Biblical text itself\, consider the interpretations of Hazal\, and then create a multifaceted conversation among an array of modern Jewish (and Christian) thinkers as they -- and we -- struggle to make sense of this text and its role in Jewish theology and spirituality.&nbsp\;

Our investigation will include such thinkers as Soren Kierkegaard\, Abraham Isaac Kook\, Joseph Soloveitchik\, Yeshayahu Leibowitz\, Abraham Joshua Heschel\, Martin Buber\, Phyllis Trible\, Uriel Simon\, Jon Levenson\, and others.
LOCATION:Yeshivat Hadar\, 190 Amsterdam Ave.\, at 69th St.
DESCRIPTION:
Join Yeshivat Hadar on Wednesday evenings\, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 pm for a new evening class given by Rabbi Shai Held!
Few texts in the history of Judaism have been as evocative\, elusive\, and controversial as Genesis 22\, the story of the Akedah.&nbsp\; Why does God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son\, and why does Abraham agree? What are the consequences of this fateful event for Abraham\, Isaac\, and Sarah -- and for us as readers and students of this text?&nbsp\;

We'll begin with a close literary and theological exploration of the Biblical text itself\, consider the interpretations of Hazal\, and then create a multifaceted conversation among an array of modern Jewish (and Christian) thinkers as they -- and we -- struggle to make sense of this text and its role in Jewish theology and spirituality.&nbsp\;

Our investigation will include such thinkers as Soren Kierkegaard\, Abraham Isaac Kook\, Joseph Soloveitchik\, Yeshayahu Leibowitz\, Abraham Joshua Heschel\, Martin Buber\, Phyllis Trible\, Uriel Simon\, Jon Levenson\, and others.

When: Wednesdays\, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm (2/10\, 2/24\, 3/3)

Cost: $5 per class
