One of the core principles of Hadar is that public prayer should be beautiful and spiritually uplifting. We are very interested in providing educational and learning opportunities related to davening (prayer), as we believe that the more that people feel comfortable participating, the better the experience is for everyone.

Beit Midrash Program

As a community of prayer, we have focused much of our learning on enhancing our knowledge of the meaning and structure of the Shabbat and Holiday service. We have also had the opportunity to branch out to other areas of learning, such as chevruta learning (in partners). Through these classes, we hope to develop a more knowledgeable and spiritual davening community at Hadar. We also hope to strengthen the bonds of our community by learning together.

Hadar meets at the Beit Midrash of the JCC in Manhattan (www.jccmanhattan.org) EVERY Tuesday (334 Amsterdam at 76th St) from 7:00/7:30 (see calendar) to 9pm. The cost is $5 per session. Click here for the current Hadar Community Beit Midrash Schedule - it will open in a new window

We are excited to build the learning component to our community. We look forward to seeing you! Please email egalminyan@hotmail.com with any questions. The Hadar Beit Midrash thanks the UJA-Federation of New York for its generous support. The program is also sponsored in part by the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel.

Summer Learning & Davening Opportunities with Yeshivat Hadar

Yeshivat Hadar is a full-time summer yeshiva focusing on text study, prayer, and social action in intensive community.  Offered through Mechon Hadar, Yeshivat Hadar will provide 18 men and women with an intensive 8-week experience (June 3 – July 27, 2007) that combines traditional text study, egalitarian prayer and social action with a special focus on personal religious growth.

This summer, the Hadar community is invited to participate along with the Yeshivat Hadar fellows in a weekly beit midrash, daily minyan, and some classes.  Please click here for details, and visit www.mechonhadar.org for more information about Yeshivat Hadar.

Davening Audio Files

We have prepared audio files that review the Shabbat morning davening, including nusah (melody/tune) as well as detailed instructions for service leaders. We hope the audio files will be valuable both to those who have led before and would like to review, as well as to those who are learning to lead for the first time.

The contents of the audio files have been uploaded to our website as MP3s. Please feel free to download them for your personal use. E-mail us at egalminyan@hotmail.com with any questions. Reviewing these files alone is only one part of the process of learning to lead, so while we encourage those interested to make use of them, we are also happy to help facilitate learning in a one-on-one setting.

Shabbat services at Hadar begin with Mizmor Shir Hanukkat haBayit l'David (the first psalm of P'sukei d'Zimra). Since other communities begin services with Birchot haShahar, we have included this part of the service in our files. Our practice is to have one person lead the first part of davening (from P'sukei d'Zimra through Shaharit and the beginning of the Torah service), while another person leads the end of the Torah service (from right after the haftarah is recited) through the end of musaf. (The final file reviews the special nusah and text for musaf when Rosh Hodesh falls on Shabbat.)

We welcome your feedback on these files. If you are having trouble downloading the MP3 files, try right-clicking on each one and selecting "Save Target (or link) As." If you prefer to have the files emailed to you, please write to egalminyan@hotmail.com.
