Halachic Notes

  • The fast begins at 8:24 PM on Saturday (before the end of Shabbat) and ends at 8:59 PM on Sunday.
  • Davening is done quietly and without nusah.
  • At in-person davening, the lights will be off and we will daven by flashlight. Most people will be sitting on the floor.
  • As a sign of mourning, it is customary not to greet people on Tisha B'Av.

Giving Tzedakah on Tisha B'Av

We are told in the Torah to turn our suffering as in Egypt into empathy for the vulnerable. We enact this on Tisha B'Av, the day we remember all our sufferings, by collecting donations for the organizations below. If you will not be attending in person, we encourage you to make donations directly using the links provided.

  • Hebrew Free Loan Society's Coronavirus Financial Impact Loan Program – providing interest-free loans of up to $7,500 to residents of New York City’s five boroughs, Westchester, or Long Island who are facing financial challenges caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.
  • The Jerusalem Model – bringing together young social entrepreneurs to work together to build a better future for all of Jerusalem’s diverse inhabitants. Including both Ultra-Orthodox and secular Jews, Palestinian Muslims and Christians, Ethiopian Israelis, members of the LGBTQ community, and others The Jerusalem Model community aligns itself around the shared principle that Jerusalem’s diversity is not her fatal flaw, but her most precious asset. (Donate online here and specify The Jerusalem Model under "Purpose".)
