Food for Thought Kiddush-Time Shiur

December 19, 2015 - 11:30am

Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan, at 805 Columbus Ave at 100th

Join us for a shiur in the side room during the end of kiddush. Jeremy Tabick will teach on some historical explanations for the second day of Yom Tov. This brief shiur will overlap the end of kiddush, so there’ll be plenty of time to nosh, chat, learn, and make it to lunch on time.

Why a second day of Yom Tov?
Second day festivals have been a major fixture of diaspora Judaism for centuries. The common explanation is that before modern calendars people weren't sure what day the holiday actually started on. Nowadays though, that seems generally ridiculous. Is it possible there's something else going on here? We'll investigate an early source for this practice and see if we can work out what's happening behind the scenes.
