Since ownership of chametz (bread and other leavened products) is not allowed during Pesach, ideally all chametz in one's possession should be given away or destroyed before the holiday begins. Since this often represents a financial hardship, the practice arose for people to store away their chametz before Pesach and arrange to sell it for the duration of the holiday. Because Jewish law requires various conditions for such a sale to be effective, most Jewish communities offer to arrange the sale of chametz on behalf of their members. Hence, by filling out the form below, you are not selling your chametz, but appointing the minyan's agent (in this case, Ashira Konigsburg, a member of the Steering Team) to arrange the sale on your behalf.
It's customary to give Ma'ot Chittin when arranging to sell one's chametz. Although feeding the hungry is a worthy cause year-round, a special appeal is customarily made prior to Pesach. This appeal is called ma'ot chittin, which loosely translated means funds for bread. Most synagogues have a fund dedicated to this purpose; various non-profit organizations do as well. In addition, a great way to get rid of your chametz and help the hungry is to donate food to a local shelter.
By clicking on the submit button below, I/we hereby authorize Ashira Konigsburg to act as my/our agent in the sale of all chametz that may be in my/our possession wherever it may be - whether at home, at a place of business, or elsewhere - in accordance with the requirements of Jewish law. All chametz in my/our possession that will not be consumed by 10:40 AM on Friday, April 19, 2019 will be stored and sealed by 11:47 AM that day and will remain stored away for the duration of Pesach. (These times are valid for New York City only.)
This form will not be available after 2 PM on Tuesday, April 16. This form is now closed. Please wait at least thirty minutes after the end of Pesach on Saturday night, April 27, 2019 before using any stored chametz, to give time for the agent to re-acquire it on your behalf (in New York City, this means waiting until 8:32 PM).
